Mini Designs

This page is all about mini design work I've done.

Mini Design 1

Redesigning the Illinois EBT Link Card Login page (desktop) with the United States Web Design System

Back in 2011, I worked at a company called Automated Health Systems (AHS). I was a customer service representative and my job was to enroll individuals into a Medicaid health plan. This job gave me a greater understanding of low income families and the struggles that they have. Jumping to 2020, I took a Treehouse Tech Degree course that discussed design systems. In this course they talked about the United States Web Design System (USWDS) and how to use it. I thought about my time at AHS, and remembered that some of those individuals asked if enrolling in a Medicaid health plan would affect their Illinois Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Link Card (also known as SNAP). I wanted to use the USWDS and I decided to browse through the Illinois Department of Human Services website to see if I could redesigning any part of it. By pure luck, I stumbled upon the Illinois EBT Link Card login page and realized that I could redesign this page.

This redesign helped me better understand how to use the USWDS and more importantly, how the feel of the website can impact a user, and how critical it is to make a site feel positive for the user. If that feel is negative then that can break the trust between the user and the organization of that site. The user experience cannot fail with this page because low income families depend on these lifesaving services. With COVID-19, I am sure that more people are using these services more than ever. That was why I wanted to redesign this page - to help those low income families feel better when they utilize this government service.

Mini Design 2

Redesigning GoPuff's shopping page (mobile app).

Problems:

  • The shopping page on the mobile app is too colorful and there is too much information thrown at me.

  • The red, yellow, green and blue backgrounds of the images are just too much and are very distracting.

Solution:

  • I reduce the colors, and added headings to help users understand the information better. Since food is primarily on the warmer end of the color spectrum, the light blue is a nice contrast and makes the product images pop. I wanted to make the cards less overwhelming and easier for users to find the information that they are looking for.

Changes:

  • Replaced “Anything” with a Filter Icon because I thought the filter icon made everything neater, removed space and was more visually appealing

  • Added larger heading to each section so users can understand the content better.

  • Removed the Carousal because I found it very distracting. I moved the carousal content to “Explore” section. (The original photos are in banner format that’s why the images don’t fit the square container)

  • Added a cookie gif to the loading screen so it’s more fun for users (maybe they’ll crave a cookie and buy one).

  • I changed the background image color from purple, red, green and yellow to a very light blue in order to make the product images pop since they are warmer colors. The point of the color change was to make everything less chaotic. The original product images don’t need to change (my photos are just stand in images).
